Achille Castiglioni (1918-2002) was the son of a sculpter. After his studies to become an architect, Achille started a study of shapes, techniques and new materials. In his long career, Achille Castiglioni didn’t only design light objects, he also designed furniture, appliances, accessories and many more objects. At first sight his designs seem to be made of materials that have been found by chance. This is where his experimental drive shines through. Achille Castiglioni’s designs are always original and playful with a practical connotation.
The Taraxacum 88 was inspired by nature. Taraxacum is the scientific name for the dandelion flower. The dandelion is considered to be a weed. But still, many people have nice childhood memories when they think about blowing on a dandelion and seeing all the seeds blow away from the furry flower, until you were left with nothing but the stem.
In stead of all the little seeds, this lamp is made of 20 aluminum triangles. These form the base of the lamp on which 120 translucent light bulbs are attached. The base has an industrial and graphical feel that is softened by the light bulbs, which make to lamp a bit more playful. The lamp provides direct light which is reflected by the aluminum triangles. The result is a beautiful light effect that lights up the room.
