AJ Oxford by Arne Jacobsen
The AJ Oxford table lamp was originally made for St Catherine's College in Oxford and shares features with the building's architecture. Jacobsen designed the college building in a modernist architectural style, contrasting with the surrounding classical architecture of Oxford University. The first design of this table lamp had a pin table lamp design instead of a round base so that it could be installed in the college's impressive dining hall. The lamp can still be found in St Catherine's College where education and accommodation are still offered to students today.
The AJ Oxford lamp draws inspiration from previous AJ collections, including a slim stand that seamlessly flows into a round base. With its graphic style and monochrome colour palette, the AJ Oxford table lamp is a timeless addition to any home. The table lamp is available in two different versions, with and without the black metal lampshade, as well as in two different heights, 'Tall' and 'Mini'. The Mini is ideal for compact spaces and looks perfect on a shelf or windowsill. Arne Jacobsen
Arne Jacobsen is a world-renowned Danish modernist architect. Numerous buildings in Denmark, Germany and the UK can be found in his name, including the National Bank in Copenhagen (1971), the SAS Royal Hotel & Terminal, Copenhagen (1960), and St Catherine's College in Oxford, UK (1963).
Arne Jacobsen was born in Copenhagen, Denmark. He graduated as an architect from the Royal Danish Academy of Art in 1927 and then started working as an assistant in the office of the Copenhagen city architect. Two years later, he started his own firm.
Jacobsen had very outspoken ideas about architecture, which often gave him control not only over a building design but also over numerous other aspects. Over time, he also broadened his scope to light fittings, furniture, sanitary ware, textiles, wallpaper, etc. 'The Egg' and 'The Swan' are two famous chair designs by Jacobsen.
During his career, he received several prestigious awards, both in Denmark and abroad. For eleven years, he was affiliated with the Royal Danish Academy, influencing a whole generation of Danish architects.
