Astep Model 2065 Pendant
The 2065 consists of two joined opaline methacrylate saucer-shaped diffusers suspended from the ceiling with a lacquered aluminium shade.
The simplicity of the design and the lightness of the materials create an elegant and free-floating luminaire.
Designed in 1950, the pendant lamp highlights Gino Sarfatti's innovative, experimental approach. At that time, glass was the favourite material of the lighting industry. But when in 1949-50 Gino Sarfatti received the first samples of methacrylate, a new polymer plastic that was much stronger and lighter than glass, his experiments led him to a new pendant lamp, Model 2065. As with so many of his designs, he continued to work with different compositions, sizes and colour variations in the years that followed.
Model 2065 consists of a diffuser made of two joined opalescent saucers, suspended from the ceiling with a painted aluminium shade. The simplicity of Gino Sarfatti's elliptical design and the lightness of the materials create a seemingly weightless luminaire.
The luminaire was relaunched in 2016 by Astep, which also introduced a version in which the upper diffuser is finished with a soft-touch coating. This leaves the lower diffuser as the sole light source, creating a more intimate light space and a strong, graphic expression. In line with the original idea, five LED lamps provide the lighting in both versions.
