Achille and Pier Giacomo Castiglioni are one of the founders of the Italian Design movement. The Castiglioni brothers started their own design company in 1944. This company grew to be one of the most famous design companies in Italy, thanks to the unique designs and the clear vision of the Castiglioni brothers.
Viscontea
The Viscontea pendant lamp is a beautiful example of such a unique design. The Castiglioni brothers designed this lamp for Flos in 1960. Their design for the lamp is build around an inner structure which is made out of steel. This structure defines the shape of the lamp. A thick layer of cocoon material is sprayed onto this structure. This cocoon material defines the shape of the lamp shade. Because of its form and the cocoon material, the Viscontea pendant lamp looks like a bright cloud hanging down from the ceiling.
