Louis Poulsen AJ
Arne Jacobsen designed the AJ lamp in 1957. Today, the Danish architect's AJ collection is internationally renowned. The collection reflects his unique modernist style of straight lines combined with oblique and right angles, resembling his designs for furniture and buildings. His original lamp designs have now grown into a full-fledged collection and are available in multiple colours.
The AJ collection
The AJ collection by the Louis Poulsen brand began in the 1960s with the original design of the AJ table lamp, designed by Arne Jacobsen. The black table lamp serves ideally as a desk lamp. This classic set the tone for the rest of the collection over the years. A typical AJ lamp provides downward lighting so that it can also serve as a reading lamp. Light distribution can be optimised by adjusting the angle of the shade according to your preference. Moreover, the inside of the shade is painted white, allowing it to emit soft light.
The AJ collection consists of the original AJ table, floor and wall lamps, AJ 50 outdoor wall lamps, AJ Oxford table lamps, AJ Eklipta ceiling and wall lamps, AJ Royal pendant lamps and the recent AJ Garden S and L outdoor lamps.
Arne Jacobsen
Arne Jacobsen is a world-renowned Danish modernist architect. A native of Copenhagen, Denmark, he graduated as an architect from the Royal Danish Academy of Arts in 1927, after which he started as an assistant city architect. Two years later, he started his own firm. Some well-known projects under his name include the National Bank in Copenhagen (1971), the SAS Royal Hotel & Terminal, Copenhagen (1960), and St Catherine's College in Oxford, UK (1963).
Jacobsen had very outspoken ideas about architecture, which often gave him control not only over a design of a building but also over numerous other aspects. Over time, he also broadened his scope to light fittings, furniture, sanitary ware, textiles, wallpaper, etc. 'The Egg' and 'The Swan' are two famous chair designs by Jacobsen. Consequently, he received several prestigious awards during his career, both in Denmark and abroad.
