Gae Aulenti, born in 1927, studied architecture studies at the Polytechnic University in Milan. She graduated in 1954 as one of two women in a class of 20. She told the Times that she was studying architecture contrary to her parents, who hoped she would become a nice society girl.
She is known for her large-scale projects in various museums including the Musée d'Orsay in Paris (1980-86), the Contemporary Art Gallery at the Pompidou Center in Paris, the restoration of Palazzo Grassi in Venice (1985-86) and the Asian Art Museum of San Francisco (2000-2003).

The most striking feature of this lamp is the remarkable shade reminiscent of the wings of a bat, hence the name Pipistrello (bat in Italian).
