What's in a name
You may be wondering: what exactly is a limited edition? The answer to this question is sometimes ambiguous. By definition, a limited edition is a (re)release of a lamp produced in a fixed amount of copies. In the world of design lighting, manufacturers usually start from an existing design. A brand will release a classic in a colour, material, size or finish that differs from the commonly known version to celebrate the luminaire's model, its designer or a special event. Unlike the celebrated version, its production takes place once or only a few times. As a result, the number of pieces available tends to be finite.
The total number of pieces produced is known at the manufacturer. Most brands share this information with us so that you, as a buyer, know exactly what you are investing in. Sometimes exclusive editions are also individually numbered. In that case, the specific number and the total quantity produced in the series of your designer lamp is provided to you with an included certificate of authenticity and is often also subtly indicated (stickered, printed or engraved) on the light fixture.
